How to Chic-ssorize

We all want our home to look sophisticated, comfortable with a modern edge.  In my opinion the best way to accomplish that is to accessorize your home with finishing touches like art work, books, mirrors, vases, etc.  I try to always advise my clients to remember to set aside some of their budget for accessories.  But, it is just as important to place the accessories in a certain way that will finish the room and make it look effortlessly chic!  I have put together 5 suggestions on how to finish any room in your home with the placement of your accessories.

Layering:

Keep things in order by using trays to group them together or layer with books to add height to the grouping.  Bunch items together to create a couple of groupings.  Have fun with your books...they don't have to be placed in one direction!

Balance:

Balance is very important when putting your accessories together.  One way to achieve this is to use various objects and arranging them in an asymmetrical layout.  This will help to create a cohesive and effortless look.  I usually group smaller objects together to create one large grouping while using artwork, lamps, or a piece of furniture to balance the other side out.  You might have to try a few times to make sure it looks right.  It takes me a couple times of moving things around until everything is balanced and the way I want it.

Contrast:

I love this one beacuse color or using contrasting colors can really make a monochromatic room pop with excitement!  Use your accessories to be the color in the room.  That way you can always change or adjust your accessories through out the year.

Style:

Stylize your coffee or entry way table to really make your place look chic and sophisticated.  Group items into three's or group items together by organizing them on a tray.  Add books to your table for height but also keep in mind the book selection.  Look for books that are beautiful and look like art work by themselves.  These books with out a doubt will turn into a conversational starter while you are entertaining.  I find the best way to get started is to collect books that you are interested in or want to learn more about.  I gravitate towards any hard cover books that have anything to do with photographer, architecture, technology, art, and design.  Also, if you don't want to spend that much (because these books are $$$) than cover your existing books with burlap or another fabric that would work best with your decor.

Harmony:

Place your art work about 8-12 inches above the table or mantel to create an eye pleasing connection.  Accessories with using various heights and layer your items in a couple groupings.  Find accessories that you like and are personal to you.  I usually find the best accessories when I am traveling and enjoy showcasing my findings through out my home.

Welcome Home

With a growing clientele, family members and friends who very soon will be first time mothers I thought it would be fitting to stimulate and inspire you with some of my thoughts and favorite images on how to create a unique and charming nursery.  When designing a nursery one of the challenges is not knowing anything about the babies likes or dislikes…not even knowing their favorite color or toy can be a huge road block!  But, I am sure any parent wants a space that helps to facilitate their young child to grow and flourish.  An environment that reflects an abundance amount of joy and excitement, endless amounts of inspiration, and of course unconditional TLC.

Lately, the trend I have been noticing is modernizing the nursery in an unexpected and edgy way.  By the use of bold graphics and pops of color create a uniquely modern environment and personally I am loving this trend!  Below are some ideas and trend setting rooms that will hopeful inspire you to create that unique nursery for your new bundle of joy.

Use a bold graphic for your rug or wallpaper which will make the space feel more modern and edgy.

Don't be afraid of color!  Be creative by creating an inspiring room for your child to grow and flourish in.  LOVE this room!!

Use their toys as pieces of art or sculpture for the nursery.  Display them in such a way that brings fun and excitement to the nursery.

Remember to use graphic and novelty pillows to layer the room with pops of color

Have your child interact in there space.  Paint the ceiling, use an alphabet rug, or use a stencil in an area that is surprising and playful for the child.

Have fun with your nursery and add your own personal aesthetic to the room.  Just because it is a nursery doesn't mean you have to make it look like a babies room!   Love the unexpectedness of these rooms.

 Star Wars room...HaHA so cute!

Light up your Life

It has been awhile since my last blog journal and for that I apologize deeply!  We all get busy so in order to explain myself I would be lying if I told you anything else than just that...I was busy.  Sorry to all of my readers.

It's a new year with new resolutions and exciting opportunities!  My design firm, LNM Interiors, has reached it's third year in business and growing everyday with over the top projects and fabulous clients!  I love the small, big and of course the challenging projects that have come along.  All of them have been rewarding in its own way.

Earlier this year another exciting opportunity came along LNM, was approached to partnering with Design Shuffle and Arcaidian Lighting to open up an online lighting store.  This store has access to a wide range of beautiful and unique light fixtures, lamps, and a section of mirrors.  This is just the beginning and hopefully we'll be growing this online store with many more must have's and fabulous items!  I encourage you to check out the new store and do a little shopping while you are in there.  Remember changing out a light fixture or adding new lamps can instantly change a room or update your space!

I hope 2012 will bring much success to you and your family!  Thanks again for reading Coco/rating and Happy Shopping!!

9. Create a collage using your own B&W photos!  What I always do before I hang a collage up is I lay it out on the floor.  I start off by measuring the size of your wall the collage is going on than tape the area out on the floor.  Lastly, I start to layout my artwork trying to keep symmetry and scale in mind.

10. Lighting!
Pendants, sconces, bathroom fixtures will instantly change your space!

Pretty to be BOLD

A great way to create a dramatic and bold room is to have one element stand out over everything else in the room.  A trick of the trade is to repeat a pattern or use a bold pattern which will guarantee dramatic results!  Now, this trick can work for any kind of style whether you are more traditional use a bold damask or trellis pattern.  If your style is more modern use a bold stripe or chevron pattern.  Below are some of my favorite examples of how to achieve a bold space.

BOLD + STRIPES = DRAMA

{DIY}

About 99.9% of the time when I meet a client for the first time they’ll show me some of their furniture that they have no interest in anymore.  Which gets me sad to see a furniture piece not being used to it’s highest potential.  Why not work with your items instead of having them be an eye sore.  So, here are some great tips on how to bring life back into an old piece or restore your items to fit your personal decor.  Also, keep in mind if you have no time to DIY reach out to a local designer or craftsmen who can help with the restoration.

Have fun with your furniture and add some paint...its only paint!  Casegoods are a great way to add color to any room!

Add a stencil to a piece of furniture to give it a custom and shabby look.

Yep, wallpaper your furniture!  A roll of paper will turn your boring piece of furniture into a uniquely chic piece!

Find a great wallpaper and use it as your art piece.  In thrift stores I always come across really ugly paintings, so whyt not turn that negative into a conversational piece. Wallpaper over that ugly thing and create a one of kind art piece.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!  What a great way to re-use an old headboard and turn it into a functioning love seat.  Get creative and have fun because if not its just a piece of furniture sitting in your storage room or garage collecting dust.

Your outdoor oasis awaits

It’s officially SUMMER!  And with that being said it’s time to spruce up your outdoor space, so it can be used to it's fullest potential.  With many fun summer events approaching I thought I would share some tips on how to get your outdoor space spruced up for all your summer parties!

              {www.marthastewart.com}

A great way to spice up your terra cotta containers is to simply paint them.  Add stripes, a bright color, or a fun usable surface like chalkboard paint will add some interest and spice to otherwise a boring container.

{www.lnminteriors.com}                                                                        {www.marthastewart.com}

Summer is a great time to use pops of COLOR when entertaining outside.  Add vibrant colors to the table with your china,  floral arrangements, or linens.  Have fun and keep it simple when setting your table!

Don't forget to set the mood! Origami lanterns and Italian light bulbs add just the right amount of light and interests to an outdoor space.  Also, you can create a beautiful glow and ambiance to your party by adding a bunch of battery operated candles.  These candles will last a hundred times longer and will never get blown out by accident.

{www.marthastewart.com}

Pay attention to the details...add moss or rocks to the base of the plant to add texture and color.

Don't get overwhelmed with your window boxes by adding flowers that need to be taken care of daily.  Low maintenance plants are the best way to go and will look great all summer!

Design + Fashion = Fabulous

I have always enjoyed using fashion to be a key inspiration for many of my interiors.  I feel fashion can be a great starting point for any room.  I was in Toronto last month and went to an exhibit that featured several dresses from one of the most stylish women of our times, Princess Diana.  Her personal style and fashion sense was admired by the world.  I wanted to share some iconic dresses from Princess Diana’s dress collection and provide tips on how to use these dresses as a key inspiration when designing a room.

What I LOVE about this dress is how simple the dress looks but because of the small details with the pleating, fabric choice, and bead work makes this dress scream elegance and sophistication!  A great way to create a timeless, sophisticated, and elegant space is to use a monochromatic color palette and add touches of crystal or metals to add that sparkle and texture to the room.

I love using bold prints in my designs!  The key when using a bold print is to keep everything else in the room subtle.  For example this amazing ball gown uses a bold plaid fabric for the bottom but on the top a neutral velvet fabric.  This technique allows you to focus on the print while the other areas become the embellishment or the details.

The detail that went into embroidering the bodice and jacket for this dress was absolutely breathtaking!  To get high impact in any room make sure to pay attention to the details...Flowers, trim on decorative pillows, metal in-lays on tables, or color in an unexpected place will give the room a high impact of sophistication!

Layer It On

One thing that I love doing in all of my spaces is layering materials and items in order to create a space that has an interesting twist and also pleasing to the eye.  I love seeing clients experience their space by visually exploring all of the unexpected details that layering can create.   I find the best way to achieve this technique is with three elements; color, pattern, and texture.

Color...find an accent color that you love and incorporate that into your accessories or artwork.  Be creative with your accessories it doesn't always have to be a glass vase.  Also don't be afraid to use a simple color palette.  If done right can be very sophisticated.  Layering various tones of neutrals can transform a boring neutral room into an unforgettable room.

Pattern...Is a great way to create dimension and texture!  Have fun with patterns.  Mix several patterns together to create a space that is interesting.

Texture...is key when transforming a room to feel luxurious and interesting.  Texture can be incorporated into a room using architectural materials, window treatments, fabrics, wall coverings, metals, and woods.

I love how simple yet chic this room is but look carefully to you see all of the details and textures that make this room feel so sophisticated.

This door is Amazing!  I cant get over the details and the mixed materials that create this door...L.O.V.E!
